Having a job no longer guarantees a good life or even survival. Sometimes, working is what keeps us barely getting by. ‘No job, no prospects’ reflects on artists’ work, or lack thereof, or not wanting it, or avoiding it, or seeking answers to the inherent dynamics of labour exploitation. It is an exhibition of artists and collectives from working-class backgrounds who pursue artistic careers while earning their income through other work, as well as those who organise collectively around art to make it a genuine means of survival and imagination. On the other hand, people who do not have a job or earn an income in what is considered a conventional way often arouse suspicion. Work continues to be a primary criterion for social validation. Spending long hours in public spaces without generating any economic benefit is often frowned upon. Sitting on a bench in a square can be a suspicious act.
Guim Camps is an artist, educator and curator. His projects explore play, associations, and economic and power relations. He is currently developing the Virtual Mods Union project, a platform for debate and action on political and emotional representation in video games. He is an assistant curator at the MACBA. He previously worked in school canteens, selling theatre tickets, as a waiter, sports instructor, community arts worker, porcelain decorator and house painter.
