‘Deriva’ [Drift] explores just that: drift, the act of drifting, where simple situations, relationships or lines of reasoning can lead. It is about looking at where a simple system – which we set in motion with a perfect understanding of the mechanism, every step and every instruction – will lead.
At a time when everything is expected to be automated, and the use of black boxes is becoming increasingly widespread, this project proposes opening up simple systems, unravelling them and repainting them to reclaim them.
It seems that every mechanical or computational system has to be deterministic: tireless, always doing the same thing, producing the same result. Mass production. But what if the result isn’t what matters? What if our drawings in the process, and where they drift, are more interesting to observe?
I am a visual artist and creative programmer working with algorithmic systems. Starting with a blank canvas, I program naïve systems that explore how simple, methodical instructions can create complex and unexpected images.
I have exhibited at a range of venues and festivals, from Eufònic to the Venice Biennale, all of which I find equally exciting. I have also travelled far and wide, exhibiting, talking about and teaching generative art.
