Identity is not a still image. It is built from fragments, looks and relationships, and it is constantly transformed by engaging with our social surroundings. It is especially so during adolescence when the looks of others, social expectations and the need to belong exert intense pressure on the way in which we perceive and represent ourselves.
This exhibition is part of the Sponsor Your Facility project promoted by the Fundació Tot Raval, which connects educational centres with cultural institutions, and of which La Capella has been a member since 2019. On this occasion, 1st-year secondary school students from Escola Pia Sant Antoni visited Chuso Ordi’s exhibition Like an Old Enemy, which served as a starting point to experiment with image and its transformations. If in Chuso Ordi’s work, the head becomes a space in which collective conflicts, pressures on the body and dissent are projected, in the students’ works, the same face becomes a territory for personal exploration and experimentation from which to imagine and recompose their own identity.
