Material Languages brings together a variety of biomaterials developed from organic waste and discards. Begun in 2018, this expanding material archive presents an open field of possibilities, materials that retain the memory of their origins and acquire new forms, textures and potentialities through experimentation processes.
The project emerged from a question: what can a material become when we consider its full potential? As opposed to the logic of discarding and classifying, which limits what we consider valuable, Loana Flores presents a practice of observing and listening to what is yet to emerge.
Loana Flores (Buenos Aires, 1987) is a designer and multidisciplinary artist who employs an ecofeminist lens to compile a variety of resources and life experiences in her work. With material as her starting point, she co-creates for exploration and as an essential practice for understanding transformation processes.
By using organic waste in combination with biodesign practices, digital fabrication and ancestral techniques, she alters the state of material to reveal its underlying potential. Through this process, she establishes parallels between material properties such as flexibility and transparency and the values that can enable coexistence. Drawing on her training in textiles, she combines unconventional materials with traditional processes such as spinning, printing and weaving to open up new avenues for creation.
