A communal dining room where participants share food, conversation and drawings. Every so often, a guest will stand up to read, sing or share something with the people around the table. The tablecloth becomes a living surface that collects stories, recipes, memories and encounters. What are left on it by the end of a meal are the traces of that encounter. As the tablecloth is covered in marks, it becomes a map of the connections between people, cultures and experiences. Each stain, note, drawing and conversation shapes a temporary communal archive through the act of sharing a table.
Arash Fayez is a Spanish-Iranian visual artist based in Barcelona. Having trained in architecture and photography, he works with video, photography and performance as ways to produce images. Inspired by the experience of displacement between territories, cultures, languages and identities, his work explores the idea of the “in-between”, often combining autobiographical stories with historical and fictional narratives. His work has been presented at institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, MACBA, the Musée du quai Branly, La Virreina Centre de la Imatge, Les Rencontres d’Arles and the Cineteca in Madrid.
