Iván Gómez

inFirmitas

From 18 April to 25 June 2023. Espai Rampa

inFirmitas is material experimentation deriving from the notions of rubbish and waste. A poetic consideration of degradation, abject things and death that give rise to what the artist terms ‘devices of sustainability’: small sculptures and processes that demonstrate their fragility and durability.

Iván Gómez’s practice has come increasingly to deal with the ways in which images, objects, spaces and people relate to each other. His praxis is hybridised, embracing a range of disciplines that address the issue of the relationship, the ‘between’ and the various ways of addressing it. He has worked on this notion in film, artistic practice, curating, mediation and writing. He graduated in fine arts from the University of Barcelona, gained an MA in Research and Creation in Art at the University of the Basque Country and has taken courses on Critique and Professionalisation in Contemporary Art Curating at the NODE centre in Berlin. He currently combines his work in art with studying for a PhD in Artistic Research at the University of the Basque Country. He has undertaken various curatorial and mediation projects in contexts such as Harriak (Eremuak), Azkuna Zentroa-Alhóndiga Bilbao, ARCO-Lisboa Fair, Sala Rekalde and Arteleku. His work has been shown in spaces such as the MAMM (Medellín), Fundación BilbaoArte, Koldo Mitxelena, JustMad, Museo Vostell Malpartida, Casa Encendida and the Cruce space, and is held in a number of collections, among them the Hamaca archive and the Pi-Fernandino Collection. He has recently created a public sculpture for the municipal cemetery in Bilbao.
